How much Internet speed do you need for IPTV?
Required speed depends on video quality, simultaneous screens and network stability. The speed advertised by your Internet provider is not always the speed actually available on the viewing device.
Simple benchmarks
As a practical estimate, allow about 5 Mbps per SD stream, 10 Mbps for HD, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. Add extra capacity for other devices in the home.
One TV or several
Two TVs streaming at the same time use roughly twice the bandwidth of one. A multi-TV plan should therefore be paired with sufficient Internet capacity.
Wi-Fi or Ethernet
Ethernet is often the most stable option. If you use Wi-Fi, keep the device reasonably close to the router, prefer 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 and avoid heavily congested areas.
Why buffering can happen on a fast plan
An old router, weak Wi-Fi coverage, simultaneous downloads or a slow device can cause interruptions even when the Internet package itself is fast.
Practical test
Run a speed test on the actual device you plan to use, ideally during the time of day when you usually watch TV.
